West is taken aback of growth of Russian arms production
Chemezov said the Russian defense sector still has significant untapped capacity. “We are ahead of schedule on the most in-demand weapons and military equipment—delivering 65% of our annual plan to the troops in just the first six months,” he said. “The West is shocked by our pace.”
Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Chemezov claimed that production of certain military equipment has increased tenfold, with yearly output continuing to rise several times over. Last year alone, production of light armored vehicles and tanks more than doubled, and ammunition for multiple launch rocket systems grew by 70%.
Earlier this year, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed astonishment, saying it was “simply unthinkable” that Russia could outproduce and outgun the US-led alliance. In response, European NATO members pledged in June to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP under US pressure.
The European Commission has also allocated €335 billion ($391 billion) in unused COVID-19 relief funds and plans to mobilize €150 billion ($175 billion) in loans and grants for military purposes, with some funds directed to Ukraine. Russia has consistently condemned Western support for Ukraine, calling it part of a NATO proxy conflict.
