Russia Calls for Urgent UN Meeting

(MENAFN) Russia has urgently requested a United Nations Security Council session following the apprehension of a Ukrainian national in Italy.

The individual is suspected of playing a role in the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines, which suffered blasts in the Baltic Sea in September 2022.

The explosions, which registered 2.1 and 2.3 on the Richter scale, ruptured gas conduits that were intended to transport Russian natural gas directly to Germany, including one that was still operational at the time.

Moscow has consistently blamed Germany and neighboring nations for obstructing the inquiry and keeping Russia out of the process.

“We will highlight the delays in the German investigation and the absence of transparency,” stated Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, via Telegram. He confirmed that the council meeting is set for Tuesday.

On Thursday, Italian authorities arrested a Ukrainian man, who has been identified by various media outlets as Sergey Kuznetsov, a former military officer.

Prosecutors claim he led a group that chartered a yacht and utilized civilian diving equipment to install explosives on the pipelines.

According to German investigators, a small team of Ukrainians is believed to have executed the attack—an assertion the Kremlin has rejected as “ridiculous.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted that the United States was likely behind the sabotage.

In the previous year, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service declared it possessed “credible information” indicating that agents from the US and UK were connected to the incident.
