Russian FM rejected claims Moscow derailed peace negotiations with Washington

(MENAFN) The Russian Foreign Ministry has dismissed reports from Western outlets suggesting Moscow derailed peace negotiations with Washington by demanding involvement in any talks on security guarantees for Ukraine.

According to those reports, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s comments on the principle of “indivisible security” in Europe were portrayed as having “effectively fractured Russia’s talks with the US” and as “an attempt to stall the [settlement] process.” He was also accused of “toss[ing] all sorts of obstacles” into discussions about possible future talks between Moscow and Kiev.

In response, the ministry insisted that Russia has maintained a clear and consistent policy on the conditions necessary to resolve the Ukraine conflict and establish a lasting security order in Europe.

It pointed to remarks made by President Vladimir Putin after his Alaska summit with US President Donald Trump, where he stated that lasting peace could only be achieved if “all root causes of the crisis are eliminated, all of Russia’s legitimate concerns taken into account, and a just balance in security in Europe and worldwide restored.” At that time, Putin stressed that Moscow “was ready to work on ensuring security for Ukraine.”

Lavrov later addressed speculation about Western troop deployments to Ukraine, an issue Moscow considers a red line. He asserted that Russia “will firmly and strictly ensure our legitimate interests,” adding, “Any serious discussion of security issues without Russia is a utopia.. [and] a road to nowhere.”

The ministry concluded by asking, “So how can anyone consider Lavrov’s words as ‘undermining’ the settlement process? On the contrary, Russia’s position is marked by consistency, and the minister’s statements confirm the points repeatedly voiced by President Putin on the Ukraine crisis.”
