Putin states how powerful Russia’s nuclear submarines is

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday that the country’s nuclear submarines can operate undetected beneath Arctic ice, calling it a key “military advantage.” Speaking to nuclear sector workers in Sarov, east of Moscow, Putin emphasized the strategic importance of the Arctic for Russia’s defense.

“Our strategic nuclear submarines dive beneath the Arctic ice, vanishing from radar. This is our military advantage,” he said.

Putin also pointed to Arctic research as vital, noting that melting ice is opening new shipping routes, giving Russia a competitive edge over other nations interested in the region.

Russia has built eight Borei-class nuclear submarines since the 2000s, with the latest, Knyaz Pozharsky, launched last year and two more under construction. The submarines carry Bulava ballistic missiles with a range of up to 8,000 km (4,970 miles). Russia also remains the only nation operating a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers.
