UN Experts Slam U.S. Sanctions Targeting ICC Officials as "Alarming"

(MENAFN) UN experts on Friday condemned the recent US sanctions targeting officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC), labeling them "alarming" and asserting that these actions represent a direct attack on the court's independence and undermine worldwide efforts to hold perpetrators of atrocity crimes accountable.

"It is alarming to see a country show such continuing hostility towards the legal and peaceful actions of an independent tribunal set up by the international community," the experts stated in a firm warning.

The US announced the new sanctions on Wednesday, imposing restrictions on two ICC judges and two deputy prosecutors. These latest moves follow prior sanctions against four ICC judges in June and the court’s chief prosecutor earlier this year.

"Sanctioning ICC judges and prosecutors sabotages the fight against impunity and tells the world that power, not justice, rules in the face of atrocity," the experts stressed.

They urged Washington to revoke these punitive measures and called on the European Union to activate its "blocking statute" to protect ICC officials from illegal retaliatory actions.
