South African President Discusses Ukraine Peace with European Leaders

(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged in high-level talks with key European leaders on Saturday, intensifying diplomatic efforts to broker peace in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to a statement from the Presidency.

This latest round of diplomacy comes in the wake of critical meetings hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently conferred with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and a cohort of European leaders.

The Presidency confirmed Ramaphosa held separate phone conversations with Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Ramaphosa acknowledged receiving a detailed update from Putin the previous week, following the Russian leader’s dialogue with Trump.

“In all the discussions, European leaders openly shared their perspectives, appreciated South Africa's role in engaging with both sides to the conflict, and provided President Ramaphosa with a firm commitment to supporting efforts aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine,” said Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson to the president.

According to Magwenya, further engagements with additional European counterparts are planned in the coming days. Ramaphosa has emphasized the need to preserve diplomatic momentum and maintain open lines of communication between all involved parties.

“President Ramaphosa stressed the urgency of holding bilateral and trilateral meetings between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine and the United States as key to signaling a firm commitment to ending the war,” Magwenya added.
