Municipal Elections Resume in Libya
According to an official declaration from Libya’s High National Election Commission (HNEC), voting took place in the municipalities of Zawiya Markaz, Zawiya Wassat, Zawya Gharb, Zawya Chamal, Sabrata, Sormane, and Bir Ghnam.
These elections were initially planned for the previous week, but had to be delayed after a violent incident targeted the commission’s offices in Zawiya.
This disruption forced authorities to reschedule the process to ensure voter safety and the integrity of the electoral proceedings.
The election rollout is part of a phased approach. The first round was executed in November last year, covering 58 local councils, while a second wave earlier this month encompassed 26 additional municipal bodies.
In response to the recent polls, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its approval of the resumed voting.
The mission urged all involved stakeholders “to peacefully accept the outcome of the voting and to resort to judicial mechanisms in case of any objections.”
Additionally, it called on the electorate “to actively participate in the selection of their representatives,” emphasizing the importance of civic engagement.
The mission also appealed to the interim administration “to remove obstructions and urgently allow the continuation of the elections in the municipalities where the process was suspended,” highlighting that this would enable all Libyans to fully exercise their political freedoms and engage in shaping their local governance structures.
Concluding its remarks, UNSMIL stressed that “the holding of elections enables the building of trust and accountability between the citizens and local leaders,” underlining the significance of the electoral process in strengthening democratic foundations in the country.
